Overview


The Board of Directors (BOD) of the Childrens Center of Knoxville (CCK) provides strategic oversight, governance, and support to ensure the organization fulfills its mission to serve families of diverse incomes and backgrounds with high-quality early childhood education. BOD members are elected for a 2-year term and advocate for inclusive, safe spaces where children can express themselves, develop life skills, and grow into compassionate world citizens.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Guide the organizations mission and vision through sound governance and long-term planning.

Financial Oversight: Ensure fiscal responsibility, approve budgets, and support sustainable funding initiatives.

Advocacy & Community Engagement: Promote CCKs work within the community, cultivating partnerships and increasing awareness.

Fundraising & Resource Development: Help secure funding through donor engagement, grant opportunities, and networking.

Policy & Ethical Leadership: Ensure compliance with regulations and uphold ethical practices in decision-making.

Committee Participation: Serve on board committees to advance specific initiatives.

Executive Director Support: Collaborate with and provide oversight for organizational leadership.
Qualifications

A commitment to early childhood education and CCKs mission.

Experience in nonprofit leadership, business law, financial stewardship and fundraising, education, or community advocacy.

Willingness to attend BOD meetings, serve on committees, and actively contribute to governance.

Ability to work with diverse groups of employees and leaders, respecting collective decisions.
Time Commitment Overview:

BOD Meetings: Bi-monthly starting in August, typically held on the second Tuesday of the month, in person at CCK, beginning at 6:00 p.m. (subject to change by board vote). Meetings last no more than 2 hours.

Committee Participation: Board members are expected to actively serve on at least one committee per term. Committees convene bi-monthly or more frequently as needed to support organizational priorities. Committees may include Program, Governance, Building & Grounds, Finance, among others. Committee involvement supports deeper engagement with CCKs mission and operations, fostering collaborative leadership.

Special Events: Board members are encouraged to participate in key organizational events throughout the year, which may include fundraising activities, community outreach, and strategic gatherings.

Onboarding: To ensure a strong start and alignment with CCKs mission, new board members are expected to participate in an onboarding process that includes a general orientation, resource reviews, and introductory sessions typically 2-4 hours over the first month.

Annual Giving & Fundraising: Board members are expected to contribute meaningfully to CCKs fundraising efforts. This includes an annual gift and engagement in select initiatives or donor outreach. Contributions are encouraged to reflect each members capacity and commitment.

Our mission is to support families from diverse incomes and backgrounds by providing high-quality early childhood education that celebrates and supports the strengths and growth of each unique child. CCK is a 3-Star certified daycare center that offers need-based scholarships and state aid subsidies annually to enrolled families.
